120 YEAR-OLD MA-JACOBS OF SOMERSET EAST TO BE HONOURED

The Government of the Eastern Cape in collaboration with the Blue Crane Development Forum (Somerset East, Cookhouse and Pearston) will 
celebrate and honour one of the worlds oldest persons  Ma-Dotyi Dora Jacobs this Weekend at the Agricultural Show Grounds in Somerset 
East.The ceremony will, in an integrated approach, mark the end of the Heritage Month  September - and the beginning of the Welfare month 
 October.

Ma-Dotyi, as she is affectionately called in Somerset East, was born on May 6th 1880 and is being considered by the Guinness Organisation 
as the oldest person in the world. The objectives of the ceremony include:

* Celebrating the Countrys heritage with a specific focus on language diversity in line with the heritage month as organised by the 
Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture,
* Highlighting the value and significance of caring for the older persons within communities in line with the welfare month as declared by 
the Department of Welfare, and
* Promotion of local economic development that is based on amongst other things tourism, agriculture and investment to the new region under 
the auspices of the Blue Crane Development Forum (BCDF).

The main ceremony will be on Sunday, 01 October 2000, an International Day for Older Persons and will feature speeches by the MECs for 
Welfare, Ncumisa Kondlo and Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Nosimo Balindlela.Other highlights of the days programme include the 
presentation of Ma-Dotyis life history, a synopsis of the development strategy of the new local government area expected to be named  
Blue Crane, as well as a present for Ma-Dotyi.

On Saturday the programme will feature a number of sporting and cultural activities.The Saturday and Sunday celebrations will mark the 
wrapping up of Heritage Month by the Western District area and the beginning of the welfare month which commences with a day for honouring 
older persons.
